YWs Activity: Ring Shopping

I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I serve in the Young Women program for girls aged 12-18. If you have any questions, the comments are yours for the asking. Otherwise, I'm going to assume you know what YWs is. I'll occasionally post ideas that can benefit other YW leaders from around the world.

....................................................................................

This activity was a big hit with our girls... possibly only because we took them to the mall, but let's just pretend it was 100% because this activity was awesome.

It's all explained here. It looks a little daunting, but trust me. It's easy. You'll have the concept memorized in a minute or two after reading. Just right click then save to your computer.

I designed and posted this image on our YW Facebook page after the activity as a reminder for the girls.

  3. I wish I could have this conversation with you in the foyer at church so you could know I mean absolutely no ill intent. YW leaders are doing the best they can- trying to go above and beyond to help these girls and we all make mistakes- I've made a ton of mistakes.

I know you have wonderful intentions and you have done a great deal of good sharing your ideas on the internet- in this one case I have to respectfully disagree. I fear the indirect result of this activity would be to unintentionally reinforce the materialism many girls already have when it comes to the ring their future husband purchases for them.

On one hand, if my daughter was to bring home this handout it'd open up a nice dialog about how 1- Diamonds don't retain their value 2- a house payment is indeed more valuable than a ring 3- I never want her 'shopping' for a husband. I'm a sensitive to this topic because I knew girls at BYU that 'shopped for husbands', girls that were obsessed about how large their diamond had to be and girls that have been entirely righteous and worthy, in their late 30's but haven't gotten married.

If you feel inspired that this activity will touch your girls in someway that they'll make more correct choices in life- then please don't let my commentary affect your choices- personal inspiration is far more important than one random voice on the internet. http://welcometomysoapbox.blogspot.com/2007/08/diamonds-are-girls-best-scam.html
